The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for the manufacture, maintenance, and repair of precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures used in the production process. The role supports efficient manufacturing operations by ensuring tooling is produced to exact specifications, maintained to high standards, and continuously improved to minimise downtime and optimise production quality.
Qualifications and role requirements:
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Matric (Grade 12)
- N4 Mechanical or equivalent (advantageous)
- Trade Test Certificate: Tool and Die Maker
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a similar role within a manufacturing environment
- Strong knowledge of metalworking processes and tooling systems
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD designs
- Experience working with precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, verniers)
- Knowledge of machining processes (milling, turning, grinding, drilling)
- Good problem-solving and fault-finding skills
- Ability to work independently and under pressure
Duties & Responsibilities
- Manufacture, assemble, and repair tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures according to specifications
- Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and design specifications
- Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders
- Conduct precision measurements and ensure components meet required tolerances
- Perform preventative and breakdown maintenance on tooling and equipment
- Diagnose faults and implement corrective actions to minimise downtime
- Modify and improve existing tooling to enhance performance and lifespan
- Support production teams during tool changes and technical issues
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and adhere to health and safety requirements
- Ensure quality standards are consistently met in all tooling outputs
