Our client is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Structural Engineer to join their team in Pinetown. The successful candidate will assist with the design, analysis and assessment of structural systems used in billboards, pylon signs, gantry signs, rooftop signage and other large-format outdoor advertising structures.
The role involves structural calculations, wind-load assessments, foundation design, technical drawings, site inspections and ensuring compliance with relevant South African engineering standards, building regulations and municipal requirements.
Qualifications and role requirements:
- Relevant qualification in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering.
- Knowledge of structural design principles, calculations and engineering specifications.
- Understanding of structural loads, wind-load calculations and structural stability.
- Knowledge of foundations, reinforced concrete, steel structures and structural connections.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, engineering specifications and geotechnical information.
- Familiarity with relevant South African engineering standards, building regulations and municipal approval requirements.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and numerical skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to prepare accurate technical documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively with engineers, contractors, architects, municipal officials and other stakeholders.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and assess structural systems for billboards, pylon signs, gantry signs, rooftop signage and other outdoor advertising structures.
- Perform structural calculations to determine strength, stability and load-bearing capacity.
- Conduct wind-load calculations and assess wind pressure, lateral loads, bending forces, deflection and overturning moments.
- Assist with determining appropriate structural member sizes, support configurations and connection requirements.
- Calculate foundation requirements based on structural loads, soil conditions and site-specific requirements.
- Prepare structural drawings, engineering specifications, technical reports and documentation for manufacturing, installation and municipal approvals.
- Assess existing structures for structural integrity, deterioration, overloading and compliance with applicable standards.
- Conduct site inspections and structural assessments to identify potential safety risks and recommend corrective measures.
- Provide engineering input into steel structures, aluminium frameworks, brackets, support frames and mounting systems.
- Review fabrication drawings, material specifications and structural connection details.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders regarding structural design, installation requirements and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure that designs and installations comply with applicable building regulations, municipal requirements and occupational health and safety standards.
- Assist with structural upgrades, alterations, remedial work and maintenance recommendations.
